Ear wax or ear infection?

My son is 6 weeks and ive noticed that he has yellow crust surrounding his ear c, as if he had some watery drainage that dried that way...which would make sense because I like to feed him laying down. Anyways...I've noticed that it smells bad. I told my friend and she said it was just earwax, but I don't believe her. I asked my mom and she said inner ear infection, but I know those are supposed to be very painful and my son isn't fussy at all. If anyone has any ideas as to what this may be, please let me know. He is scheduled to see the doctor bright and early Friday morning, but I'd just like to see what people think.
