Mom needs hysterectomy why couldn't anesthesiologist intubate?

Mother was scheduled for major surgery. One minute she's out the next she wakes up they're putting on a mask and giving her a spinal so they can do a biopsy. The surgery was called off because they couldn't intubate, is this normal? Whether biopsy shows malignancy or not they have to operate what are alternatives to intubation?
